Stanley William Hayter, chimiste de formation, est devenu alchimiste de la couleur. Inventeur de la technique des viscosités, dite « méthode Hayter », il a révolutionné la gravure, technique réputée longue, fastidieuse, difficile.  Son œuvre gravée, généreuse, est empreinte de modernité dans la transposition des couleurs, leurs superpositions et les effets de transparences qui en adviennent.

Mais si Hayter est un chercheur, un pionnier même pourrait-on dire ; c’est aussi et avant tout un insulaire. Et ce n’est peut-être pas un hasard s’il crée l’Atelier 17 à New York, lieu d’échange où tout semble encore possible. Cette sélection de gravures « About Water » nous emporte dans des courants marins, dans des territoires inconnus où la science-fiction ne semble jamais très loin…

 

Stanley William Hayter, a chemist by formation, became an alchemist of colour. He invented a technique of viscosity printmaking called the “Hayter method”, which revolutionised printmaking, a process that had previously been thought long, tedious, and difficult. His prolific graphic work is imprinted with modernity in its transpositions of colours, their superpositions and the transparent effects that emerge.

Although Hayter was a researcher—even a pioneer—he was also quite insular. This is one of the reasons he created the Atelier 17 in New York, a place of exchange where anything was possible. This selection of prints “About Water” carries us along ocean currents, into unknown territories where science fiction seems never far off...
